The German Digital Library starts the German Newspaper Portal with central access to historic newspapers from 1671 to 1950

Around 4.5 million newspaper pages in about 600,000 editions are online
By means of the Deutsches Zeitungsportal (German Newspaper Portal), the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library) enables central access to digitised historic newspapers from German cultural and knowledge institutions: it collects digital newspaper stocks in a bundled way, makes them visible online and accessible free of charge.
Users can find newspapers by searching for title, place of distribution or publication date and sort them according to various criteria. A calendar shows when which newspaper was published. Any keywords can be used to search for newspapers or in newspapers, individual editions or pages; the search results can be filtered by using the date of publication or location, language or library. While the continuously scalable original image is displayed, research in the text is possible. Furthermore, complete editions or individual pages are available for download. Images, full texts and metadata can be accessed via a public programming interface (API). All newspaper editions are provided with a license or a reference to rights so that users know at all times in which way the newspapers can be used.
The Deutsches Zeitungsportal starts with 247 newspapers from nine libraries, which cover a period of nearly three centuries and 84% of which have full text indexing. The oldest newspaper "Il corriere ordinario" was published in 1671, the most recent “Badische neueste Nachrichten” on December 30th, 1950.
The offer is continuously being expanded so that the number of newspapers is growing steadily. It is intended that in the long term, the Deutsches Zeitungsportal makes accessible all digitised historic newspapers being stored in German cultural and knowledge institutions.
The Deutsches Zeitungsportal is a sub-portal of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and, like it, links digital holdings – in this case historic newspapers – from different institutions on one portal.
The Newspaper Portal can be used free of charge without registration. Cultural and knowledge institutions – that would like to be involved with their newspaper holdings – are very welcome.
The Deutsches Zeitungsportal is being set up by four project partners: Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library) (Project Management), Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB – Saxon State and University Library Dresden), Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Berlin State Library – Prussian Cultural Heritage) and FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz-Institut für Informationsinfrastruktur (Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure). The build-up of the Deutsches Zeitungsportal is financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG – German Research Foundation) as well as the four project partners. After being activated, content and functions will be optimised and extended in an expansion phase.
