The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek presents at the Leipzig Book Fair
Germany’s second largest book fair will be held in Leipzig from 12th to 15th March 2015. Attracting approx. 2,000 exhibitors from over 40 countries, the Fair is a meeting place not only for authors and publishers, creative spirits and media representatives, booksellers and librarians, but also for readers, cosplayers and culture enthusiasts from around the world. The theme of this year’s fair is ‘1965 to 2015. Germany – Israel’ and is dedicated to German-Israeli dialogue.
This is the first year that the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek will be at the Leipzig Book Fair. In Hall 5, devoted to novels, non-fiction and service providers, visitors will have an opportunity to learn about current developments at the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and discuss specific aspects of its work.
We are also delighted to be part of Europe’s largest literature festival, ‘Leipzig Reads’. On Thursday 12th March 2015 we will be holding a book launch and reception to mark the simultaneous publication of the DDB’s latest book, ‘A Future for the Past: Cultural Heritage in a Digital World’. The two publishers - Deputy General Manager of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek Ellen Euler and the lawyer Paul Klimpel – will be talking with co-authors Monika Hagedorn-Saupe, Eric W. Steinhauer and writer/photographer Jürgen Keiper. They will discuss the challenges associated with the digitisation of cultural heritage and consider the framework within which this is taking place, posing the question: Where is it a help and where is it a hindrance in giving our past a future?
For more information on the publication, read our interview with the publishers here.
Book launch of ‘A Future for the Past: Cultural Heritage in a Digital World’
'Technology transforms our world. In the last twenty years we have seen how all-pervasive digital technologies and their interlinking on the World Wide Web have brought about enormous changes in almost every area of life. Culture is not immune to these developments. Archives, museums, libraries and scientific and conservational institutions alike are facing huge challenges. How are they to fulfil their social function in a changing and shifting environment? Within what kind of framework are they operating and how does this framework help or hinder the process of giving our past a future?'
A conversation with the publishers, Dr. Ellen Euler and Dr. Paul Klimpel, and authors Prof. Monika Hagedorn-Saupe, Jürgen Keiper and Prof. Dr. Eric W. Steinhauer, Chaired by Astrid B. Müller
The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek cordially invites you to a reception afterwards.
