The German Digital Library at the Genealogists’ Day 2024

19.09.2024

For the first time, the German Digital Library is taking part in one of the largest annual specialist congresses for family researchers in Germany. In 2024, the German Genealogists' Day will take place in Berlin, and around 750 participants are expected.

The German Digital Library is participating with a lecture, is supporting the congress as a partner in organizing it, and is presenting itself at the accompanying trade exhibition.

In its lecture on ancestry, the German Digital Library is presenting the possibilities that its subportals Archivportal-D and the Deutsches Zeitungsportal offer for genealogical research. With around 2,500 registered archives and around 32 million items of object information, the archive portal offers genealogists a comprehensive directory of German archives of various types as well as a wide range of material for searching for ancestors: address books, birth registers, marriage certificates and even university personnel files. The German Newspaper Portal makes historical newspapers accessible via a central full-text search. Over 23 million newspaper pages can be searched for surnames or places of birth, for example.

The German Genealogists' Day is one of the largest annual professional meetings of German-speaking genealogists and is organised by the German Association of Genealogical Associations (DAGV). The association is the umbrella organization of genealogical and heraldic associations in Germany and has 72 member associations, which in turn represent around 22,000 individual members.

This year's 74th German Genealogists' Day will take place from October 25 to 27, 2024 in the Berlin Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion, Reconciliation. In addition to a lecture program, companies, associations and foundations will present themselves at a specialist exhibition, and guided tours of the Documentation Center for Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation will also be offered.

The Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion, Reconciliation was founded in 2021 as a place of learning and remembrance on displacement, expulsion, and forced migration in the past and present. The documentation center is run by the Federal Foundation for Compulsion, Expulsion, and Reconciliation.
