New member in the competence network: FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure
The Board of Trustees of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek approved the entry of FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure as a full member of the competence network of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek. This does not affect the role of FIZ Karlsruhe as a service provider of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek, which is laid down in a separate cooperation agreement.
On the recommendation of the Executive Board and on the subsequent resolution of the General Meeting, at its last session, the Board of Trustees of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek approved for the first time the expansion of the competence network of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek by a new member.
Underpinning the work of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek is a competence network: Its bodies include the General Meeting, the Board and the Board of Trustees. The participating cultural and scientific institutions exchange information and contribute their combined experience to the joint task of expanding the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek. With the entry of FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure the General Meeting now includes 14 members.
"With the expansion of the competence network, the partnership-based cooperation relationship with FIZ Karlsruhe is brought up to date and finds its formal expression in the membership in the competence network", said Hermann Parzinger, the Spokesperson of the Board of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and the President of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation).
FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure was selected as a technical operator of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek in an open call for bids in 2009, and since then has been responsible for the entire IT infrastructure. It includes the publicly accessible portal, the processing system or the so-called data normalization system, and the partner network system. In addition, all data provided by the cultural and scientific institutions are pooled at FIZ Karlsruhe. In addition, FIZ Karlsruhe assumed important tasks in software development as well.
Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, Director and Business Manager of FIZ Karlsruhe, explains: "I am very excited about the entry into the competence network of the DDB. The DDB has been and is by far more than a service contract for FIZ Karlsruhe. We have regarded the DDB as an important strategic project from the very start, with which we could expand the portfolio of our scope of activities."

The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek
The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek interconnects the digital material of cultural and scientific institutions across Germany and makes the data accessible on a central platform. It provides free and unrestricted online access, in digital form, to artworks, books, pieces of music, monuments, films, documents and a mass of other treasures held at German cultural and scientific institutions. The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek functions as a network, cross-linking and presenting the digital material of its partners and contributing to the democratisation of knowledge and resources.
