This year, for the first time, the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek will take part in the “Shaping Access! - More Responsibility for Cultural Heritage” conference, which will be held on 28th and 29th November 2013 in the Jewish Museum in Berlin.

Experts and professionals working in the fields of culture, politics, business and civil society will spend two days addressing issues relating to access to cultural heritage in the information age.

The increasing variety of technological options available to the digitisers of material are transforming the perceived role of society in the storage of artefacts and with it the relevance of museums, libraries and archives. Increasingly these institutions are not so much depositories of knowledge as forums for knowledge transfer.

The “Shaping Access! - More Responsibility for Cultural Heritage” conference will assemble a variety of specialists active in culture, politics and the business community to discuss opportunities, problems and challenges and the question of why access to cultural heritage should be a public responsibility.

Themes of the conference:

Philosophy
In the light of digitisation, what part is played by the presentation and purveyance of cultural heritage in archives, museums and libraries and how do these institutions approach these challenges?

Expo
A variety of innovative projects will be showcased in an interactive forum, with their representatives engaging in dialogue with the audience.

The position to be taken on cultural heritage
What is the state’s function in this regard? What part is played by the new civic initiatives and what role is being adopted by the private sector and why?

Legal framework
What impact does state responsibility for cultural heritage have on the legal framework? What legal scope must be granted to memory organisations?

The conference will be chaired by Dr. Paul Klimpel (iRights Lab Kultur).

The conference will contribute to the discourse on the opportunities, impediments, challenges and changes faced by libraries, archives and museums involved in the digitisation of material and on these institutions’ relationship to other organisations, initiatives and commercial companies. It is funded by the Jewish Museum Berlin, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, the Internet & Society Co:llaboratory, the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek, the iRightsLab, the Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland e.V.  and Wikimedia Deutschland e.V..
