DDBpro is online: Discover the new info portal for Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek data partners

04.11.2015

The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek is making the inventories of German cultural and knowledge institutions available online for free. To this end, the digital contents of our data parters – museums, libraries, archives, media centres, monument conservation groups – as well as further research institutions will be interconnected. Since the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek was activated in November 2012, the number of data partners has risen steadily. Since then, we have gained over 2,300 registered institutions on our cultural map.

With the constant growth of our data parters, the demands on process organisation and information supply have also grown. The new portal DDBpro takes account of this and makes information and instructions for registration, data delivery and data cleansing available – edited, of course, for the individual cultural sectors. It also names who can be contacted for information and explains the advantages of and requirements for participating in the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek.

DDBpro was established by employees at the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek Service Point who offer an overview of the individual sectors of our new website here:

What makes it worthwhile to participate in the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek? Which institutions actually come into question as DDB data partners? And what steps must be taken when becoming a DDB partner? This and many more questions are answered by DDBpro, which is intended for both new and current data partners.

We list the reasons for the institutions to participate in the DDB with their collections and objects and explain which conditions must be fulfilled for participation. As the respective processes could vary from one cultural division to another, there is also more specific information geared toward archives, libraries, monument conservation, media centres and museums on DDBpro in addition to general information.

Simplified registration

Institutions can now register with the DDB by themselves using DDBpro. As of now, it is no longer necessary to request login credentials from us. Using our new registration portal, you can register a new institution without obligation or change the data of an institution that has already been registered. We describe exactly how it works in the "New registration quick start guide".

Information and contact partners

DDBpro is not only geared toward new partners. Even if you already deliver data to us, it is still worth a look. In the section with services, offices and documents, we make information on questions about copyright as well as a collection of documents and links available. We have also developed a glossary because it is repeatedly brought to our attention that a series of technical terms has arisen out of working with digital cultural heritage which need explaining. It defines important terms taken from the DDB context, offers descriptive examples as well as additional links. A calendar raises awareness of upcoming events where DDB is involved.

By the way: For every issue DDBpro handles, we have listed the appropriate contact partner(s) directly on the corresponding website so that you can always find the shortest path to us.

A service under construction

A lot of the contents on DDBpro are the direct result of the daily work performed by the service and the specialist departments. As the DDB is a very dynamic project that is constantly being developed, the version of DDBpro that has been published now is only a beginning. In the coming weeks and months we will be preparing more materials such as information on mapping tools and validation tools. If any of our data partners have any requests or questions, we would be glad to receive your feedback. Contact the service [at] deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de (Service point) responsible for DDBpro.

The Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek hopes you have a great time browsing and discovering!
