Bahnriss?! Papier I Kultur - A virtual exhibition of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek curated by the Deutsches Buch- und Schriftmuseum/German Museum of Books and Writing of the German National Library

Berlin, April 19th 2017
Joint Press Release of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library)

On the occasion of the World Book Day on 23rd April 2017, the virtual exhibition “Bahnriss?! Papier I Kultur” (“Bahnriss” means “web break”) will be released. The exhibition, which is the result of the cooperation between the Deutsches Buch- und Schriftmuseum / German Museum of Books and Writing of the German National Library in Leipzig and the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek builds on a temporary exhibition that was shown in Leipzig in 2016. The digital presentation under the roof of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek guarantees a sustainable presentation of the scholarly treatment of this historical theme, which is surprisingly topical.

Should someone shout, "Web break!" in the machine room of a paper mill everyone knows what has happened: a technical failure, the paper mill has to be started all over again. However, in the 21st Century, there is a “break” in a completely different sense: the close connection between paper and culture which has shaped our civilisation over hundreds of years is facing competition in the age of Apps. In addition to paper, other modern and faster media are appearing. The use of paper and its importance for society are subject to a rapid functional change.

The exhibition “Bahnriss! Papier I Kultur” closely examines the eventful history of the universal material paper in 17 chapters. The exhibition covers the rag business of pre-industrial times, security watermarks and abandoned newsprint plants right up to the present day. In doing so, however, the exhibition does not join in on the polyphonic melancholy of the cultural pessimists who can sense the doom of culture.

And so, the show joins the row of the broad spectrum of themes of virtual exhibitions of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek. Whether they were the Grimm brothers, the Memory of Dance or the Dresden Maya Manuscript, or the History of the City of Karlsruhe or Expeditions at the beginning of the 20th Century: the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek uses the virtual exhibitions to show the variety of themes covered by over 21 million exhibits that are available at the moment. Exhibition pieces such as works of art or everyday objects from museums, files and certificates from archives or records - whether these are printed books or manuscripts - as well as historical audio recordings of music or animal voices, all of these are made available through 300 data partners and, in their entirety, represent the broad spectrum of cultural heritage.

In implementing the virtual exhibition “Bahnriss! Papier I Kultur” the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek / German National Library  have drawn on years of faithful and productive cooperation which is now also bearing fruit with the digital presentation of exhibitions.

The book, like no other medium, has shaped our culture and civilization: for years, our knowledge about the world and about human beings has been stored in books. The role of the Deutsches Buch- und Schriftmuseum / German Museum of Books and Writing  of the German National Library in Leipzig is to collect, exhibit and scholarly process testimonies in book and media-historical form. Founded in 1184 as the “Deutsches Buchgewerbemuseum in Leipzig”, it is ranked as one of the oldest of its kind world-wide and, in terms of its scope and quality, as one of the most important museums in the field of book culture.
