“Archivportal-D” wins “Heritage in Motion Award” 2016

Berlin, 25 May 2016
Press Release by the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek

The “Archivportal-Dproject – the branch-specific access to the data of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (German Digital Library) – has won the European “Heritage in Motion Award” 2016 in the “Websites and online content” category.

The jury explained the award for the project lead by the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg (State Archive Baden-Württemberg) as follows: “This well-structured website is easy to navigate, leads quickly to digitized objects and is suited for the needs of very different users. A solid project and an example for other archives.”

The President of the Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg Prof. Dr. Robert Kretzschmar says: “We are very pleased that our work wins recognition also in the European context. The award is a good evidence of the importance of the “Archivportal-D” as a comprehensive project for all archives in Germany”.

Sponsored by the Europeana Foundation, the prize is awarded by the European Museum Academy and the pan-European Federation for Cultural Heritage Europa Nostra to multimedia projects dealing with tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Europe. Innovative offerings presenting the European heritage and making it accessible through the media in a multi-step process are evaluated in a multi-stage process. This year, 32 projects from all over Europe were submitted, four of them won the award.

Frank Frischmuth, CEO for Finance, Law and Communication of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek congratulates the colleagues of “Archivportal-D”: “This award shows that we are on the right track: To make cultural heritage as easily accessible via the Internet and as comprehensive as possible is the objective of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek and its sub-projects!”

The “Archivportal-D” is a subproject of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek since 2012. It uses the data base of the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek: thus the information is visible in both of the portals. On the one hand it spans across different branches, and on the other hand it is presented in the archive-specific context.

The “Archivportal-D” sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) (German Research Foundation) is supervised by the project partners, Landesarchiv Baden-Württemberg, Archivschule Marburg (Archive School Marburg), Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sächsisches Staatsarchiv (Saxon State Archive), FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure and since 2015 it is also supervised by the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library).
